The Power of Words

Hello Class!

Please forget about everything else that is going on around you right now, put your cellphone down, and focus exclusively on watching Maya Angelou's marvelous declamation on the first video:

  1. What did you feel while she was declaiming? Why is that? Explain.

After that, let me tell you that the very moment when the famous ─and one of the weathiest women in The U.S.─ Oprah Winfrey read Maya's book "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" and found out that Maya had also been raped at a very young age by someone very close to her family, a strong and unbreakable connection was built, and this is what I call THE POWER OF WORDS.

    First part
    1.The way that she declaimed the poem made me to enjoy it, because,she did it with a good enthusiasm.I think that anyone would like listen her because,she shows that she write.

    2. My favorite part it was the last lines becuase,she present the word rise as she achieve the success every day. She made me to reflect about leave the pass behind and rise Up every moorning and continue with my dreams and goals.

    Second part.
    1.I consider Maya Angelous as an exemplary woman for my life.She is an strong person,worth admiring Also a hardworking an intelligent person. It does not matter how many problems she had in her life. She is a woman that achieved that success.She is an example that, Although we have a lot adversities we have to follow along the way in our lives until the end.

    2.*To Get a friend you have to be ready to be a friend:She explained this example with a son. I consider that this is important becuase, we need to give the best as friend to receive the same of them.

    *Say not when is not:In some circunstances we need to say a clear not and do not go back because,this make us to be sure at the moment that we take a decision.

    *To protect yourself: when some people come with a rude language to you.It is important that we do not pay attention to them. It is necessary think in ourselves first.
    At the end of this, I liked that She always mentioned God in her advices. She consider him the most important in her life.

    I felt that I was part of the audience, super impressed and focused on her words while she recited her poem. Her way of grabbing attention and her charisma make her fantastic. It is incredible how she envelops with her words to all who listened. Simply, she is wonderful. Great poem from this amazing poet.
    2. What's your favorite part of the poem? Why.
    I certainly continue to identify myself specifically when she says:

    You may cut me with your eyes,
    You may kill me with your hatefulness,
    But still, like air, I’ll rise.
    Because although the people who are around us criticize or question everything that one does, we must continue to live and excel no matter what they say about it.

    My opinion is that Maya Angelou never stopped being who she wanted to be, despite having a rather rough life. She was relieved using her pencil and yellow paper, where she expressed herself using the best words to hide every bad experience of her life. She did not publish so that those who read it felt sorry but in spite of it they could see the good side of life.
    2. Which one of the three pieces of advice she mentioned is more personal and helpful for you right now? Explain.
    Forgive and protect yourself; The benefits of forgiving help us to have a better life with ourselves, the people who forgive everyone who offends us and want a better life for them, makes us have a fuller and more fruitful life, no grudge and therefore our health and quality of life is better. Protecting yourself for me means stripping away everything that affects our self-esteem, our goals, our health, and our future.

  3. 1. It made me feel motivated to persevere in life. No matter what situation we may affront in life we must put our heads up and continue with the hope that we will succeed in life.

    Up from a past that's rooted in pain

    I felt familiar with this phrase and I liked it because in life we must forget our past, live the present and build a wonderful future.

    1. I consider Maya Angelou as a wise woman that had receive lot of knowledge during life experiences. A very humble lady that even she knows a lot, she doesn't know everything. Life thought her many things, specially how to take care of her heart in order to take care of others hearts. Maya Angelou is a woman that inspire through her wonderful poems.

    2. FORGIVE... I think in order to have peace in our hearts we must forgive others, as she mentioned not to continue sharing but to finish a situation and protect our heart and feelings.

  4. 1. When I was hearing her poem I feel interested and impressed in her declaiming, first because is an amazing poem for its verses. Secondly she declaimed her poem with dynamic, enthusiastic and happiness that make me feel and think that it doesn’t matter the problems because the women has the power to overcome them with optimism.
    2.My favorite part of the poem is when she says:
    You may shoot me with your words,
    You may cut me with your eyes,
    You may kill me with your hatefulness,
    But still, like air, ill rise.
    I like this part because give the enthusiasm to overcome problems in the life, I mean that as woman, I could have many obstacles and people who could hurt me and make me feel bad. However I have to see the life with energy, optimism and still rise and never give up.

    3.My opinion about Maya Angelou is that she is a strong woman with an enormous heart. Who has learn a lot of knowledge but she recognize that has not learn all the knowledge yet. Also she gives energy and inspires us always to be forward and never stop in our life.

    4.I think that her advices are magnificent for us but one of them that Maya Angelou mentioned is FORGIVE. Because I think this is the first step to have a better life. It is to say if we forgive the people who hurt us in the past, we can a peace in our present.

  5. 1_ I felt happy and at the same time impacted by her way of declaiming, I could see her strength of will and her desire to live with every word that came out of her mouth.
    2_ My favorite part is “I Rise”, they could be just a couple of words, but, the power in those two amazing words are indescribable, “I Rise” gives us the idea that, horrible things can happen while we pass through this world, but the really important thing is that, no matter how bad they are, we should never let ourselves be overcome.
    3_ My opinion of Maya is that she is a very brave woman, I guess that is not easy to be a rape victim and grow up to be a person of good. I´ve never heard her poems before and now that I did I want to read more about her.
    4_ “in order to have a friend, be ready to be a friend” there are a lot of people that a person can know, but so few that are really friends. In order to have a very good relationship with somebody the person first has to evaluate himself before asking for something.

  6. 1. I felt with hope, that doesnt matter waht your living in this moment, the problem you have, how people make you feel, always we can rise. There is no power enough to destroy us, we can be bettter. Sometimes things happens and we feel like if is the end of the world, but that is not true. We have something inside us that gives us the strenghth to continue, even though if we fell again.

    We live in a world where we are surrounded by violence, not only with guns and hits but also a psychological violence. And we are used to live in that way, in our family, in the job, at school, etc. Even children are used to give it and not only that to receive it too.

    3. I think in Maya Angelou as a great woman. A person full of gift and a great example for humanity. Her life means so much to give, so much to learn from her, inspires generations with her words and life. This is the kind of people we need to follow, to get close, to teach in our schools.

    4. "Leave one space in you, clean and clear for God", obiously she had the strenghth to live and rise only with the help of God, not leaving the bad things of her life damage this valuable part of her. I think is the best advice we can receive from her. An example of a woman who trusted in God.

  7. 1- At first I felt really interested because it was unusual as the ones I have seen before. I really like her enthusiasm, her gestures and everything!!
    2- my favorite part is: Just like moons and like suns, with the certainty of tides, just like hopes springing high, still I'll rise... I like this part because I think that with effort, courage and dedication we can always get ahead no matter how low we have fallen in life!
    3- I see Maya Angelou as a really strong, brave and intelligent woman, she has gone through a lot in life and still always strong and kind and also still inspiring us through her poems.
    4- I liked 2 of them. the one is to forgive because in orfer to have a peaceful life we dont have to live with resentment in our hearts. And the other one was that in order to have a friend, we have to be ready to be a friend. I liked this ine because now many people just one a frien to be there whenever they need them, but many of them also dont like to be there when a friend needs them, so a friendship for me has to be reciprocal and real for sure.

  8. 1.-I felt power in her words, when I hear she declaimed this amazing poem with strong, she can transmit how she felt and how she never give up...

    Well when I read this part of the poem I can thing about, how our world is in a surrounded by violence, when sometimes is not necessary to use a gums to kill, becouse our words have the power to give love or bad things in a easy way to open our lips. But one thing is true the love is more than big that the people that show hatefulness.

    3.-Maya Angelou for me is in amazing and brave woman, she was a beutiful woman who's words of wisdom will live on even though she has left us,no matter the circunstance that she happened in the momment she is a good example of humble woman.she has a young spirt of the life.

    4.-“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”I like this advice because when we forget all the things that the people has done we can receibe peace of God.we can be free. and we can love.

    1*- I really enjoyed Maya Angelous`declamation, because her way to declaim the poem was amazing, she looked confident and relax, she transmited feeling and her audience was part of her daclamtion.

    2*- My favorite part in the poem

    I really like this part, because there are people who like hurt other with their words and their action. In my case I suffered something similar, but I continue grow up as a good person.

    second part

    3*- Maya Angelous for me is a strong woman, she is self-confident and a good example. She is a phenomenal woman because throught her powerful writing she inspired wisdom, freedom and she inspired generation of women.

    4*-Two pieces of advice that is more personal and helpful for me are *forvige and forget* because those help us to have peaceful in our life and live happy.

  10. 1- THIS IS A VERY STRONG POEM!

    It gets right to my very soul and conciousness...I say this because for a very long period of time in my life I was subject to bullying and abuse, as I was growing up! and many people just atacked me because I showed myself as a very Introvert and maybe a wise person,very quiet and peaceful...boys and girls my age got it the wrong way..they thought I was weak, and Idiot or a fool maybe...nothing further from the truth!

    2-And that's why this is to me, in that sense, my favorite part of this poem::

    YOU MAY SHOOT ME WITH YOUR WORDS
    YOU MAY CUT ME WITH YOUR EYES
    YOU MAY KILL ME WITH YOUR HATEFULNESS,
    BUT STILL,LIKE THE AIR, I'LL RISE.

    3- as for my opinion on Maya Angelou...is that she was a very strong woman,with a possitive attitude towards life despite all the wrong things taht she had to live and witness in her life time.. I think she is wonderful a an artist and that she was beyond of being just a writer...she was also a performer of her art...a showgirl of her words... the vessel of her very feelings and thoughts!

    4-The piece of advise that hit me the Most was the one about keeping a PRISTINE place withing you..a place that nobodycan touchorruin or soil... that's a very strong message and a very hard thing to do...keeping that spot clean place inside your soul is or has to be one of the most complex things you can achieve as a human being,just because we are all sourrounded by evil and decay and apathy towards existance itself...

  11. 1- I was impressed to see the ability she has to convey different emotions to her audience is very inspiring to see how she has the ability to captivate her audience with her powerful words.

    2- You may write me down in history
    With your bitter, twisted lies,
    You may trod me in the very dirt
    But still, like dust, I'll rise.

    In this stanza, Maya Angelou gives of her heart and soul to declare that nothing and no one could oppress her or keep her down. She doesn’t care what the history books saw, for she knows they are full of twisted lies.

    3- I think Maya Angelou is an amazing woman with many virtues and a great heart because despite the obstacles that she had, she always had the courage to get up every time she fell, and also was a woman who inspired many people with her powerful words And that charisma that characterized her.

    4- ´´Forgive´´ because I think that people cannot be happy if they always live with rancor in their hearts, sometimes it is very difficult to forgive but it is necessary to do it to live happy and quiet.

  12. 1. The way she use her words to express her feeling make me think that every women over the world can change her life. She wakes up inside me feeling of hope, because even when life is uphill and knocks you down several times, there is a power within you that will help you keep rising. In few words, no matter what is going on, you should keep fighting, you should never give up!

Strength, courage, self-control, security, success, and so further are just a few of adjectives I can use to describe this woman, even when few minutes ago you had no idea who that woman was, one of her poems is enough to show you who she was and a great example of life every woman can have if she wants.

    2. Say NO when is NO!
    Sometimes is kind of hard for me reject people or their request because I do not want to hurt anybody, but life taught me in a bad way, that many times you should say NO instead of trying to please others for the reason that you will always be disappointed when those people do not act in the same way than you or they will use rude language or invasive language to refer you even after you served them. When you live by pleasing others you forget yourself and that is exhausting and sooner than later, you regret to live in that way. Be kind, be sweet, be helpful but you should never forget, when you have to say NO, you must to say NO.

    Excellent declamation. She makes the audience feel every word of her poem as the poem comes to life in her, enjoy every second of her declamation was fantastic.

    What's your favorite part of the poem? Why?
    I love the final stanza, Angelou talk about the slavery in which they lived years ago reveals that she intends to leave behind all the effects of slavery and the history of oppression with intent to rise above it. She claims that she will leave behind teh "terror and fear" and that she will rise above the pain and the oppression "into a daybreak that's wondrously clear"

    What is your opinion of Maya Angelou?

    A very wise beautiful woman and persistent because when she says about the forgiveness part, it's not meant for me to be around those that hurt me. I think she does not need to say how she feels or what she's thinking all that does through the poetry that is the best way to tell her life

    Which one of the three pieces of advice she mentioned is more personal and helpful for you right now?

    FORGIVE… Choosing not to forgive gets us stuck in our own past, preventing moving forward. Without forgiveness you are constantly stuck in your own past. Many people waste years of their lives in bitterness and resentment

  14. 1. She made me feel many emotions, I felt Positive, optimistic and strong. I really like the poem, but most of all the way in which Maya Angelou declaimed it; she feels the poem and enjoys it.

    declaiming it was truly an inspiration because it is an amazing example of how Life continues and not letting others bring us down.

    2.I like the second and fourth stanza because it has a powerful and positive attitude.

    I think that She was very intelligent and insperitional person liked when she said in the interview "I know a lot but I still don't have it all".

    The advice that I like was when she said we Most forgive I think that forgiveness is very important in our life if we want to be happy.

  16. 1# When I saw the video of the declaiming of the poem by Maya Angelou, I know that the power of wise and wisdom were going to come by the words of this woman, I felt very expectative and suspensive about the way in which she will declaim but I can saw that she was an excellent declaimer who transmitted to me different feelings such as happiness, sadness and joy at the same time. In the declaimed of the poem I can saw that she shared different feelings according to the lyrics of the poem, and also I can observe that she was totally sure of herself and she control absolutely good all her feelings.

    2#This is my favorite part of the poem. You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like air, I’ll rise. In my opinion on this stanza we can see the figurative language behind this lines, where the writer make reference to the racism, sadness, hateful, mistreated and oppression that the black Afro-American folk suffered time ago by the white people in the United states. Even though all this mistreated, hateful and so on, she is still arising. also in life we go through many difficulties that will tested us but we don’t have to give up, we have to overcome all these obstacles and always go ahead.

    3#What do I think about Maya Angelou?
    Maya Angelou for me is an example of strength and courage, a woman that through her life she had to suffered many adversities and overcome many obstacles, only imagine being raped at a very early age of life is something that can mark a human being for all the life and also the racism, the hateful and all this stuff that she suffered. also I really admire this woman for her poetry, her talent and her wise words in each poem. the message that she always present behind all the lines of each poem and the strong message of each poem are very interesting and fascinated. for me she was one of the best writer. also Maya showed us that in life all the humans are the same nobody is most important or most special, it doesn’t matter the money, the color of the skin, status and politicians, she showed us that we have to live in an equal society where everybody have to have the same straights and Freedom. She also taught us that we have to love ourselves, we have to love, to accept and care ourselves.
    4# Forgot and forgiveness is something that really caught my attention because in life we have to practice that because through life we are going to have a lot of problem and difficulties that sometimes it will leave us some very bad memories about some situations in life, but those situations let us different anecdotes and we don’t have to forget the anecdotes of this mistakes of however you want to call it, we have to keep the anecdotes and the best moments of happiness and joy in our life. but if we really want to be happy in life I think that we don’t have to have memory for bad moment and sadness, we have to let it go and give space for forgiveness, peace and love. forgiveness is something that is really important because some people never forgive and they have this regrets, hateful and Grudges that doesn’t leave them be happy. So we have to give room for happiness, peace, forgiveness and love in our hearts.

    At that moment when I was watching the video I felt very strong, confident and sure of myself because the way that she was declaiming makes me feel like that also I felt that anything or anybody can hurt me and that I have to protect myself.

    My favorite part of the poem “Still I Rise” was:

    Weakened by my soulful cries.
    This stanza caught my attention because I think that sometimes somebody wants to see us our heart or feeling broken down and it depends if we let that damage us.

    My opinion about her is that she is a wonderful poetry, she does her job whit love, passion and motivation I believe that because she made poems to help other people in special to her son and she said that there are important things in order to follow to be ready to the life and always we have to keep our dreams.

  18. 1. This powerful declamation of the poem “Still I rise” by Maya Angelous, made me believe in an optimistic way, no matter the human or social opressions, still we’ll rise.
    Maya’s interpretation conveys a sense of hope. Toward her interpretation she conveys a sense of hope. But also, engaged me in the way she did creatively use the correct tone of voice, gestures and the passion felt in each of her words. Not to mention, that Maya as a human being was such an inspiration not just for all the black souls, but for everyone.
    At this point I don’t know how many times I´ve replayed it.

    2.There are two parts of this interpretation, which I consider my favorite ones.
    First; “You can shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your lies, but just like life, I’ll rise. Besides, people will judge you, people will talk about you, people will project their stuff onto you. In fact, some people won’t like you at all, even though they don’t even know you. This is unavoidable. Instead on focusing on all the above, make peace with this up front and keep on doing what you’re doing. Keep on being you! Keep on rising!
    Second; “I am the hope and the dream of the slave…and there I go!” I loved to hear this from her, because nothing gives more hope than a dose of encouraging words delivered from the heart. In a world where selfishness and sharp words prevail. Keep in mind that, we are meant to go and be someone else’s HOPE.

    THE POWER OF WORDS.
    1. Since Maya was a truly powerful woman, which suffer not just different circumstances but the toughest ones. She did fight through all the obstacles that lie between where she was and where she wanted to be. I believe she was such a kind-hearted, a unique leader, with such a peaceful mind. Her legacy still influence on our generation and inspire us to dream, to learn more, to do more and become or achieve more. I just love her!

    2.She mentioned the following advice for her son; “There’s a place in you, that you must keep inviolate, you must keep it clean so nobody has the right to treat you bad. Tell people to back up! Stop! Say no, when you have to say…No!”
    We all have to get to realize that we are valuable and that we are free to have our own opinion about ourselves and over others. I have learned that if you live your life depending on other people’s approval, you will never feel free and truly happy. If you depend on other people’s approval, what you are basically saying is “Their opinion of me, is more important than the opinion I have about myself. In fact, your problems do not define you. It’s okay to make mistakes, nobody is perfect, and we all have those things that we regret for. This is what makes us human. What makes a person great is not their looks or achievements, but their willingness to love others, be humble, and grow as a person. We are unique, valuable, and important. No one else in this world can offer what you can. So, believe the fact that no one has the right to offend others. No one!

When she was declaiming the poem "Still I Rise" I felt lost in the world because she caught my entire attention, I mean her gestures, her laugh in the exactly moment and how she changed from happiness to sadness, the way of how she enjoyed to declaim, to share her own feelings. My favorite part of the poem is stanza number 6
    "You may shoot me with your words,
    You may cut me with your eyes,
    You may kill me with your hatefulness,
    But still, like air, I'll rise"
    I like this part because is powerfull, transmit a strong feeling like anybody can distroy me, I am the woman I am the survivor of a thousand wars and one more its nothing for me.
    I think Maya Angelou was a wise woman with a lot of experience not only writing but in the entire life, also in the video I could apreciate energy in her, no matter how old she was, I was able to identify a small spark when she spoke.
    The advide that I could take for this moment in my life is: "Say No" Because you have to take care of that beautiful part inside you full of peace and anybody can invade it, also I think that is important to learn to say no to conserve that peace.

    1. I felt some sort of happiness Couse by the way she talks, she looks natural and sincere in both words and body language.
    2. “Out of hut of history shame, I rise”
    In this line sums up what the poem is about.
    3. This lady over the years of her life has gain wisdom. Even though she had a difficult childhood she was able to overcome those traumas, since she considers herself a “Child of God” she has gain a very high self esteem. Just by being what she thinks about herself.

    2. my favorite part in this poem is the last stanzas, when she mentions that every day we can to get up, for to get success. we have to forgot the past and be happy in the present.

    3. Maya Angelou is an example of the mowan, I admiring her works, her talent, how she got up from a difficult past. She in each works talk about our real world. and she show us, that we can reach our goals, but we can hard work.

    4. I like when she says that we are a good friend and get a friend, I think that in our life we need to have a good frien in which we can raly and she or he trust us too.

    1. What I felt while she was declaiming was enthusiasm because I liked so much how she declaimed. Also I felt with wish of see the video until the end. The poem made me to be interested in want to understan its verses.
    2. My favorite part is all the gestures that she did while she was declaiming because she enjoyed to declaim her poem.

    1. For me Maya Angelou is a good poet because she enjoys declaiming her poems. I liked something that she mentioned about to learn to live with all that we know. Also she is a happy woman with all what she knows in her life.
    2. The advice that I liked was when she talked about forgive. It is an important advice because we have to learn to forgive and ask for forgive too. So we will learn to take care of ourself.

    In my opinion Maya Angelou is a woman that now wants she wants to achieve in life and she never gave up, she is a good example. She is the person that teach us how to do the things in life, if someone need a example in life, because don t feel admiration for someone that person need to listen to Maya Angelou.

    I think, forgive is the most helpful piece of advice, because if you forgot that bad things in life you can concentrate in the good things and the beautiful that life can be to everybody and specific for you, that piece of advice can change your life. The only thing that everybody need around the world is forget.

    1. For me was very exciting to see all the passion she puts in the declamation of the poem, the intonations and expression in her face. I also admire how she explain the poem like telling a story with humoristic side and sadness and courage in her words.

    2. My favorite part is when she laugh because is as her prop in the declamation is not written exactly but it was a beautiful surprised.

    1. I think after reading her life watching this interview that is a woman that deserved my admiration and as teacher is the kind or role model, I like to present to my students. Listening to her words I feel all her knowledge and wisdom she have from all the experiences she had in her life. It is a soul that is one in a trillion…

    2. The piece it touch the very bottom of my soul that nobody has the right to hurt you since these lesson I learned it very late in my life. There was a time that I aloud all the people around me the power of hearting me. As Maya said “No, back off” the word “NO” it is powerful but nobody teach me how to use it until was a very dark time in my life. Now I can be happier than those days by just saying a word of two letters…. No.

    1.- When I saw the declamation of her poem "Still I Rise" I felt motivated to achieve everything I want in life. Because She transmit inspiration.

    2.- My favorite part of the poem is.
    Just like moons and like suns,
    With the certainty of tides,
    Just like hopes springing high,
    Still I’ll rise.
    Because if you want to have success in life, you must have the certainty that everything will work out well.

    1) When I watch the video the first thing that I felf was her confidente in the way she declamed in her gestures and movements she made that make me feel like she is like the way she declamed the poem like a empowered woman that want to take the bad thing from life in the best positive way and hitting with her actitud to those Who wants to sede her o you bad also the way as she declamed made me want to take my life as she expresses it without fear and some of humor and transmit confidence to those Who feel happy when you look not good.

  29. I felt admiration of the way she expresses confidence and i think she sends out a great message to the world letting them know that it doesn't matter how bad situations may seem you cam still rise from the ground and fix it

  30. 1. As Maya was declaiming her poem, I couldn´t help myself and smile. Her sassiness as she declaimed was priceless.
    2. I can say, without a doubt, that my favorite part of the poem is getting to listen to it from the author herself, straight from the horse´s mouth as some might say.

    1. Mayas was a woman that deserved to be heard, she was full of raw wisdom. She was a fighter, despite of all the crap she had to deal with throughout her life; she decided those where not the things that were going to define he. Instead, SHE ROSE.
    2. I have to go with her advice on forgiving. That is because it´s not easy to do so; however, rather than dwelling on it, we have to let go.
