Romeo & Juliet - Act 1

Hello my Literature Lovers!

As it was natural, after reading Act 1, Scene 1, 2, 3, and 4, so I am posting here the live performances for each scene, starring Orlando Bloom as Romeo and Condola Rashad as Juliet

This is an adaptation in which the main characters wear jeans, ride motorcycles, and show some naughty behavior sometimes, but it literally keeps Shakespeare's original script as we have been reading it in the class.

Please watch both videos and choose FOUR out of the following five questions to answer:
  1. Describe Mercutio's character. What type of friend is he to Romeo? Would you like to have a friend like him? Why? Why not?
  2. Describe Lady Capulet's personality. How does she speak and behave? How is her relationship with Juliet?
  3. What's your perception of Juliet's relationship with her nurse? How is it different from her relationship with her mother?
  4. Why do you think Shakespeare decided to choose Verona as the setting for his masterpiece?
  5. How is the emphasis on the feud between the families an essential key in this first act for the other four acts ahead? Explain.

Remember that opinions can not be exactly the same, and if you do not answer every question to the detail, you will not get all the points for your comments.

Deadline: Sunday, July 16th, at 11:59pm.

  1. Q1: Mercutio is the sound of reason for Romeo, even if Romeo does not head to his advice. Mercutio tries to convince Romeo that he is not in love with Rosaline and that all he feels is infatuation. Mercutio would be someone I would like to have as a friend. Would I listen to his wise advice? Probably not, but I just know from his character that he would be there when I have majorly screwed up.
Q2: Your typical high society mom is what we find in Lady Capulet. I would describe her as loquacious but also misguided. She like many other women that have married in order to have wealth behave and think the same way. She believes that it is all about money and social standing which is exactly what she is trying to convey to Juliet. Nonetheless, Juliet is not completely sold on the idea of advantageous marriage; she has come to prove that she has a mind of her own and is not easily seduce by the idea of wealth. Their relationship is a bit of a tangle.
Q3: Juliet adores her nurse. It might be because of the link they´ve shared for so long; after all, she did nurse her (breastfeed her since she was born). Juliet sees her nurse like a confident and not just as someone who is there for her all the time. The roles have been switch; Juliet views her nurse as her mom and her mom as an authority figure. It almost seems as if there is nothing sentimental to link them to one another.
Q5: The feud serves as a foreshadowing of what is expected to arise later in the play. It is common knowledge to most that Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy not a love story.

  2. Mercurio is a kinsman to the prince and also is Romeo´s best friend, his personality is very simple, he gets to the point. Yes I would like, because I prefer to talk with direct people able to tell me their sincere opinion about the world without fear about what I´ll think.
Well I dont know if I am wrong but Lady Capulete look like an Impulsive madame in the way of how she speak to the nursery maybe because she is jelous, she behave like a obedience wife and unattended mother.
I consider Juliet is very closer with her nursery, because they show a good relationship, also It looks like she had more love for the nursery than for her own mother. The relatationship between Juliet and her mother is difiicult to describe I think, they have something that separets them, her mothers indifference.
Shakespeare chose Verona for the setting of Romeo and Juliet because this city had and also nowadays conserve a medieval aspect. In the story Verona represent a crazy and exotic place.

  5. 1) I describe Mercutio as a loyal and wise friend. He was always trying to give Romeo advices, especially in love situations. I probably would like to have a friend like him because sometimes I might ignore situations and he could also see things from a different perspective than mine.
    2) Lady Capulet was a lady from a noble family. She was an ineffectual mother, she was caring more about other situations, normal in a woman of her social class and not for her daughter. This situation caused a hard relationship.
    3. The relationship between Juliet and her nurse was very close. Since Juliet was born her nurse took care of her and that created a great relationship. The nurse became Juliet's confident, intermediary and adviser.
    4. The feud was a war between two noble families that started with a fight between Montague's and Capulet's serving men. Since that situation the feud started.

2.Lady Capulet was a woman that comes of the noble o loyal family, that always does the things according to the society, but that had a bad relationship with her daughter.
    3. the Nurse and Juliet had a good relationship, the nurse was to closer with Juliet a example is, Juliet always tell her feelings, emotions and deep thought.

  7. 1. Mercurio, a kinsman to prince. He is Romeo's best bro. He's dirty, funny, and out of control. He is an anti-romantic friend who regards love as an exclusively physical pursuit. He has an adversarial concept of love that contrast sharply with Romeo's love perception. I definitely would like to have a friend like him, he is we and open-minded, he is not afraid of telling what he rely thinks so he's loyal and honest.

    2. Lady Capulet, Juliet's mom. A woman who maaried Capulet when she was Juliet's age. She loves her daughter but as an ineffectual mother who left all of the raising of her daughter to the Nurse. She was a woman from the Nobel society, so the way that she speaks is delicate and classy. She often does not pay attention to Juliet. She is very cold against her. She ignores her request about not marrying with Paris because she believes more in the material happiness than in love.

3.Juliet's relationship with her nurse is extremely strong. Juliet and her nurse have been together since Juliet was born. The Nurse has almost taken over Lady Capulet's job as a mother. She was with her far more often than juliet's mother was. Is the Nurse who truly knows and understands the yearnings of Juliet's heart.

    4. Accordingly with my investigations, I think Shakespeare chose Verona because fits perfectly with the theme. Verona has been a romantic city for hundreds of years. Castles and balconies were needed to dramático the play.

  9. 1. Mercurtio is an outgoing, fun man to be around, a loyal, and honest buddy to Romeo. I would definetely have a friend like Mercutio. Indeed, three significant characteristics I seek in a good friend are; honesty, loyalty and trustworthy understanding.
    2. Lady Capulet is a conservative woman, who completely cares for her public roles. As a mother, she is strict, and not given to close personal and affective interaction. From my point of view, I would say that in a way she is a bitter lady, not quite sure, but it seems like. Talking about their relationship, between herself and her daughter, it is a very formal one.
    3. The nurse is more like a mother, considering that she has cared for Juliet since she is a baby. Juliet's closest bond is not with her mother, but with the Nurse. In fact, she has become a faithful, and reliable confident to Juliet.
    4. Verona is the perfect setting for this love story. Not to mention that Verona, being known as the city of love. I do believe that Shakespeare couldn't picture a different place for such masterpiece.

what kind of friend is he to romeo? he's a good friend to romeo or at least he means well by advising him about dreams he even getts a little carried away in some way it seems as if mercutio's was in love with romeo wich it would give more sense to his homoerotic love for Romeo.
would you like to have a friend like him? definately yes when it comes to loyalty nowadays it seems like it's impossible to find and its just easier just not to trust nobody cause you can see that even if he is against romeo's way of thinking he is going to support his final decission if he doesn't convince him so he is a good friend no matter the circumstanses

  14. 1. Mercutio is a great friend to Romeo. He is a very sincere and very funny person. He is one of those friends that one would never get bored of interacting with. And of course I would love to have it among my favorite friends!
    2. Lady Capulet looks like a very dominant woman, arrogant, strong and frustrated or worried that her daughter is not yet married. She has a tone like smug or proud but sweet at the same time. She has a common behavior of her time and the high social position, people with a lot of character and superiority. Their relationship with Juliet is not so close because they have different positions regarding marriage, but despite that it is noticeable that Juliet holds much respect to her.
    3. The relationship between Juliet and the nurse is quite close, perhaps closer than the one she has with her mother. This is perhaps because the nurse is very funny and gives that feeling of being able to trust her. However the mother is completely the opposite of the personality of the nurse.
    4. It is nothing new that Italy has the most beautiful places and lots of culture, and its language is one of the most romantic and fascinating to spread love. Obviously Shakespeare fell in love with all the beauty that Italy has. Perhaps because of that scent of romance emanating from it, many of his works are inspired by Italy

3-I think that the relationship between juliet and her nurse is very close and strong, because the nurse gives her

  16. 1. Mercutio is the Romeo`s best friend, he is the use of reason to Romeo. He is intrepid, hostile with women and he is the type of friend to Romeo to say the truth about love from his point of view in a crude way but he is trying to help Romeo. I like to have a friend like him because sometimes we need a loyal person who give us an advice when we are in love.
    2. She is authoritarian person, strict and strong character I perceive her as a person who wants to have the control of the situation, she speaks with power her behave is authority. The relationship whit Juliet is absent and far.
    3. My perception about Juliet`s relationship with her nurse is that Juliet see her like a friend because she is confident, loyal, funny and sincere. The difference between her mother is that with her she cannot speak because she does not listen to her.
    4. I think Shakespeare decided to choose this place because may be he believed that this place was perfect to meet the love for the first time.
    5. The emphasis on the feud between the families is an essential key because this will trigger a tragedy and a prohibit love.

  17. 1.- Mercutio is quite cynical because he calls love a “butt shaft” this could mean that he is a cynic although Romeo says “He jests at scars that never felt a wound” Which means he has never been on the receiving and of love so his feelings towards women are mostly physical. He is very fun loving and has a genuine love. And of course I would like to have a friend like Mercutio becaouse he is love to have it among my favorite friends he is funny and have a mind different in many things.
2.-Lady Capulett's like many other mothers of teens, Lady Capulet has her hands full with Juliet. Sure, Lady Capulet does make an effort to reach out to her daughter now that she's of an age to be married. There's also the more general issue that Lady Capulet is just being a good, obedient wife by going along with what her husband wants—and the really kooky interpretation that she might be pursuing an affair of her own, given her excessive praise of Paris's pretty face.
3.-I think that thaye are very closed the Nurse and Juliet may have a loving, teasing sort of relationship at the beginning of the play, but when Juliet needs her most after her parents order her to marry Paris the Nurse betrays her.
4.-Well I think that Shakespeare choice Verona because this most romantic of cities.Shakespeare describes the setting of his most famous love story.
5.-This statement means that both families are from Veron, they are the same in dignity but they have been feuding for a really long time. But the feud of both families is what makes the play so interesting. In Romeo and Juliet, the family feud is responsible for everything, the death of Romeo and Juliet. If there wasn’t a family feud, then Romeo and Juliet will not need to hide their love.

  18. #1. 'Loyal,' 'devoted,' 'funny' and 'witty' are just a few of the words that describe Romeo's best friend, Mercutio overflows with imagination, wit, and, at times, a strange, biting satire and brooding fervor.

#2. Lady Capulet is just being a good, obedient wife by going along with what her husband wants—and the really kooky interpretation that she might be pursuing an affair of her own, given her excessive praise of Paris's pretty face. Juliet and Lady Capulet do not appear to have a very close relationship. Throughout the play Juliet refers to her as “Madam” and not mother.

#3. I could percieve that Juliet had a very close relationship with her nurse, as if they spent good moments during the day; I mean that of what I could see was that they had a relationship as two friend.

#4. What we think is super cool about the setting is how Shakespeare shows us that Romeo and Juliet have such different worlds. We always meet Romeo in the streets, never in his own house—even though we do hear that he likes to spend a lot of time moping around his bedroom. But in general, Romeo is part of a freewheeling and masculine world, wandering around the streets with the other hot-headed violent street youths from both families.

  19. 2. Lady Capulets seems to be from the high society, a hard mother, because when she call Juliet she enter running. She speaks as if everything is a huge event. The relationship with Julia seems to be cold, there´s no affection perceived between them. When he wants to talk alone with Juliet he have a second though and immediately called the nurse.

    3. The relationship with the nurse seems better; they huge and she express to know much more a Juliet than her mother. There is different from her mother because they see happy between each other.

    4. I think that he decide to use Verona because of the buildings and aspect that the city has. I also like to think that since his father was a merchant, she tell different stories of the places he visited and Shakespeare construct their own settings by his imagination.

    5. Because it submerge us to the relationship between this two families. In addition, make us a clear picture what could be the consequences of the feud. It is interesting how the events develop so Romeo is almost enter to the party in her enemy’s house.

  20. 1. Mercutio is loyal, devoted, funny, sometimes burlesque, passionate, and moody. He is Romeo’s close friend. He advises but also makes fun of him.
I have not had very good experiences with some that I considered friends but, someone who is for you, take care of you, advise you, share bad and good things with you and make you laugh; Gosh! That someone deserves to be part of your life. Maybe we all need a Mercutio in life.
    2. She is cold, selfish, an incompetent mother, and believes more in material things than in love. She often does not pay attention to Juliet, she left the responsibility of raising his daughter to the nurse. For that reason, Juliet is closer with nurse than her mother is.

    3. She is Juliet’s faithful confidante and loyal, not only gave her breastfeeding since Juliet was born but completely devoted to his care. They are very close maybe it is because Juliet’s mother does not listen to her and finds in the nurse the affection and attention she needs. Juliet has a formal relationship with her mother based on duty and respect.

    4. It would be because the characteristics of the place fit perfectly with the play or maybe at that time people had never been to Verona and He could create anything and the audience would believe it because they did not know about the place.

  21. #2 Lady Capulet looks like a very strict person, she speaks in a very formal way and behaves like that as well. She only gives commands to Juliet and asks her the correct way to behave and what things she has to consider specially in the theme of marriage.

#3 Juliet has a very close relationship with the nurse, she knows her secrets and keeps them. The opposite with her mother. She doesn’t share with her thoughts and feelings.

#4 I think Shakespeare chose Verona as the setting of his master piece for the beauty of the city, the geographical attributes of the landscape, its river and hills. The streets and buildings. All these components as the perfect ingredients for the great piece of literature he was preparing.

#5 The feud is the main component in this love story. Because when something is prohibited the desire is greater. The story can never be the same if both lovers were free to marry. Shakespeare begins the story with these situation to remark the division between the two families and their men.

  24. 1. Describe Mercutio's character. What type of friend is he to Romeo? Would you like to have a friend like him? Why? Why not?
Mercutio is a very good friend to Romeo I would say his best friend he will tease Romeo and do anything to make people laugh he is faithful, funny and humorous he has a personality that could lightens anyone mood, he seems to hate emotional people, he makes a lot of jokes, has a very strange personality as well short temper, he tends to get angry very fast, he goes from being all happy and joking to angry. Well I will absolutely love to have a friend like Mercutio in my life why? Because he is loyal, funny literally a clown, a good person, outgoing, and trustworthy he is like the perfect best friend everyone would want in their life. I LOVE Mercutio <3

    2. Describe Lady Capulet's personality. How does she speak and behave? How is her Juliet relationship with Juliet?
Well I think that Lady Capulet is a very arrogant, controlling, and selfish household woman who only does what her husband says. And also she is focusing on getting her daughter married to right person. Lady Capulet doesn’t make an effort to reach out to her daughter when she does try to talk to Juliet she has to do it with the Nurse by her side because it seems like she doesn’t like confrontation it's obvious that Juliet's closer the Nurse.

    3. What's your perception of Juliet's relationship with her nurse? How is it different from her relationship with her mother?
The Nurse relationship with Juliet is very strong and powerful because the they had been together since Juliet was a baby. she was with the Nurse more than her mother this bond is important to Juliet because this is the person who she trusts the most, who tries her best to get her what she needs. The nurse is Juliet's closest buddy her best friend. Juliet is distant from her mother meanwhile the Nurse is a like a mother for Juliet and basically raised her. Juliet’s mother has little control over her she had and still thinks she is a baby so this is why I think that their relationship is very distant.

    4. Why do you think Shakespeare decided to choose Verona as the setting for his masterpiece?
I think that Shakespeare couldn’t have thought of a better place to make this love story. Since Verona is considered a romantic city the setting for his masterpiece fits perfectly, and also maybe because of the building and castles.

3-The relationship between Juliet and the Nurse is extremely strong and this is shown all through the play, they have been close ever since Juliet was born as the Nurse has almost taken over Lady Capulets job as a mother.
4-I think that Shakespeare decided to choose Verona because it is a historic and charming Italian town, it has a nice mix of architecture that for me makes it the most precise setting for the story.

She seems to be a cold and arrogant woman and also as a mother. She speak with confidence and rudeness. The relationship that she has with Juliet is not good they are not so close. When Juliet needs her she is not to her and she does not give to Juliet the love and protection that a mother use to do.

My perception is that Juliet feel more confidence with her nurse because she gives her the love, affectionate and trust that she doesn't receive from her mother. There is a big difference the relationship that Juliet has with her nurse unlike her mother because with her mother she receives just coldness and with her nurse she receive comprehesion.

    Answer #4
